Jean Shafiroff and Patrick McMullan hosted a SAVE THE PIT BULLS cocktail party for Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation last Friday, a kick-off for Southampton Animal Shelter’s Unconditional Love Gala, which takes place on July 18th at a private home on Gin Lane.
Over 100 of us gathered in Shafiroff’s posh Park Ave home including her two well-behaved pit bulls Daisy and Bella, who she and husband Martin, with help from their daughter Elizabeth rescued from Animal Care and Control (ACC) in NYC when both pooches were on ACC’s list to be euthanized.
“Sadly, the first dogs to be euthanized at most shelters are pit bulls. They are also the ones that find it most difficult to be adopted. Public opinion against pit bulls must be changed. Pit bull fighting is a crime in the United States and those involved in such fights are subject to prosecution,” said Shafiroff. “Sadly, pit bull fights occur in New York City and must be stopped. Please report to the police any pit bull fights you may know of taking place around you or elsewhere,” implored the night’s hostess.
With goals of keeping pit bulls behavioral and healthy, she then introduced the shelter’s no-nonsense Dr. Teresa Meekins, who simply got the message out of what people can do to help. “Come to the shelter and adopt one.”
Boom.
