Legendary actor James Brolin talked to Parade.com about his secret to being married to superstar Barbra Streisand, when he and his wife will share screen time, and the surprising place you might find him next: in the pilot’s seat. Check out some highlights:

On directing someone in his family…
“I could direct [my son] Josh, and he could direct me. I’m not sure about my wife [Barbra Streisand]. She’s so much of a director herself. I would be blessed if she directed me. I’m putty in her hands anyway.”

What about sharing the screen with Babs?
“We’ve read several things and she likes wonderful, old classical stories. We read five or six top notch scripts together and looked at each other and said, ‘Ehh, not quite right.’ But we always had it in our minds, so you never know.”
The secret to wedded bliss…
“It’s being with somebody you can negotiate well with. And if you need a referee, bring someone in and talk it over. The fact is, I am in my third marriage and I do not believe in divorce. But I was half the problem, I guarantee you. More than half the problem. I couldn’t negotiate with the other women. My wife, we can negotiate very easily when there is a difference of opinion. I believe that anybody who gets married should go to a counselor for months before the wedding. I think that’s going to save guys a lot of money and the ladies a lot of heartbreak.”
