Did you ever wonder how matzo (cracker-like unleavened bread) was made? And would you like to visit one of the only family-operated matzo factories remaining in the United States? Then, Streit’s Matzo factory and store is the place for you. Located on the ever popular Lower East Side, Streit’s has been baking matzo since the early 1900’s and estimates to make about 22,000 pounds of matzo a day according to the New York Post. They even make chocolate matzo! (pictured here) Besides selling a bevy of products to choose from, they are giving free, appointment only tours of their factory accompanied with free samples of course. Even cooking doyenne Martha Stewart visited the factory a few years back. Although its commonly eaten during the Jewish holiday of Passover, matzo is eaten all year round.
