HBO’s new documentary ‘Lucky’ airing next Monday, July 19th was a winner at Sundance but the director found not always a winner at home. ‘Lucky’ follows the lives of the lucky (or not) few who have won the lottery, and shows what is has done to them and the people around them. It takes an entertaining and candid look at the seduction of the lottery and what winning huge jackpots can do to people when forced to grapple with their new status in the world. One of the people profiled is a local hero who saved a boy from a burning building and whose $16 million lottery payoff seemed like a reward until his life came apart at the seams. Another one is a woman who spends up to $100. A day on the lottery and still after 30 years believes she will soon land the big win. Along with the insightful portraits of winners and losers, Oscar nominated director Jeffrey Blitz provides fascinating factoids about the lottery industry and shows us that money can be the root of all evil.
