“Claude Monet: Late Work,” an exhibition of the most significant gathering of the french impressionist’s late paintings, is on display at Larry Gagosian’s Chelsea Gallery here in NYC. The opening reception last night brought out the who’s who of the art world including Larry himself. I asked the art dealer why show this collection and he said, “They are beautiful paintings, I just wanted to see them.” He’s right, beautiful, breathtaking and included in this showing is the $20.2 million water- lillies painting from the collection of hedge-fund big wig Steven A. Cohen, the founder of SAC Capitol Advisors in CT, according to Bloomberg.com. “It’s a brilliant thing to do,” said David Norman, Sothebys Co-Charman of impressionist and modern art. It’s good for marketing and sales.” Whether the Cohen painting is for sale or included only to peek market interest in Monet, is unknown. Significant Monet paintings cost around $10 million. However, in 2008 the auction record was set when another of Monet’s water-lillies paintings sold for a whopping $80 million. Recession? Hogwash.
