Spider-man ‘Turn off the Dark’ opened on Broadway to previews last night but in reality it should have been a technical rehearsal. I wasn’t there but a Broadway producer friend of mine was and along with the critics he too had reluctantly declared it an utter mess and disaster. From the shock of wires and lights flying around and practically clobbering my friend on the head to the grueling and long 3 ½ hour show, underwhelming music and a confusing script, it’s no surprise Sarah Jessica Parker and hubby Matthew Broderick left at intermission. Even a score written by one of the best bands in the world U2’s Bono and The Edge, a ridiculous $65 mil budget, what should have been amazing daredevil flying scenes, and the talents of award winning director Julie Taymor, couldn’t spin this superhero out of his crazy debut web on NYC’s Broadway.
