Chock Full O’Nuts holds a dear place in my heart and reminds me of when I was a kid and would go with my mom and sit at the counter and enjoy a ‘ladies lunch’ after a morning of shopping. Now lately, ladies lunch with mom means grabbin’ Dunkin’ Donuts. So, you can imagine how thrilled I was when I practically fell into the new old stand by on East 23rd St after perusing Mario Batali’s decadent breads at ‘Eataly’ down the street. That’s right, the original lunch counter Chock full o’Nuts is coming back, and they’re bringing with them their signature ‘nutted cheese’ sandwich made of cream cheese and chopped nuts on dark raisin bread that everyone and their mother would order. Yes, there are a few mini-counters that have lingered through the years around and about the city but the new one on 23rd Street off Fifth Ave is a full-service one that looks to be the first of many. The lunch counter company that also spawned a major brand of coffee, has of course increased their menu and offers breakfast, dinner and everything in between. The famous coffee is still delicious and do stop in for the original whole wheat donuts bargain special, two for 99 cents. Not even Dunkin’ can top that. www.chock23.com
